They're Here!

Art and I drove over to North Mississippi Regional Park last Sunday to check out the Heron rookery. It was a sunny but chilly day, nice for a brisk walk. We didn't get far before I spotted this guy- my FOY Turkey Vulture!! I nearly tipped down a hill trying to get a few shots as it floated overhead. Who needs herons when there's this beauty in the sky?

As a fellow buzzard fan, I rejoice in your recent arrivals. My TVs have had their spirits dampened a bit this morning (see post) but have finally gotten themselves airborne and off on a, er, brunch foray.

Happy vulture watching!

I saw bunch of them here in a tree a few weeks ago. It's hard for me to like these fellows. I'm thinking it was all the westerns I watched as a kid. I've always been an eagle fan but didn't care much for hawks until they started landing in my yard. I saw how beautiful they are and now I'm a fan of the hawks....so there is hope for me yet with the vultures. I just need to get to know them.

PS great shot of the Turkey Vulture. I had to chuckle about how you almost went down the hill trying to get the shot. When I see a good bird (or animal) when we are driving, I'll yell, "STOP!" because I want to get that shot. My husband tells me I'm going to cause an accident that way. He has no idea why I'm yelling stop. It's not like I can control a involuntary reflex :-)

I like turkey vultures too Lynne! I'm going to have to keep my eye out for them for you!! (P.S. - in the last building I worked at - Turkey Vultures have nested on top of it for the past 20 years - it was awesome to sit in my office on the 28th floor and see them soar by!)

Grizz- I think we need to start a fan club!

Linda- To know them is to love them!

Kim- Aren't the wings amazing? They have THE MOST effortless flight. My jaw drops when I see them soar.

Shelley- Another member of the fan club! I would love to see them fly at eye level.

I saw one last weekend down in Fillmore County. It's definitely a good sign of spring!

Amen, sister! That's a beautiful shot. Good going! I'm still waiting for my first siting of these great flying machines this spring.

The Turkey Vultures are so beautiful when they are soaring. You actually captured him, I don't do so well at it.

I'll never understand the appeal of the TV, Lynnie. I see at least 2 dozen every day and while they are pretty soaring, they just don't get my knickers in a bunch like they do yours! Glad they returned to you this year.

Oh, you are so funny Lynne! I just can't see it myself - and when they come back they just 'clutter' the skies and I stop so many times thinking they are an eagle and then...you know the rest...haha! I did take a cool shot of some today...when I upload it I'll make sure everyone knows it is just for YOU ;-)

Glad your TVs are back! I can't imagine living somewhere that doesn't have vultures year round.

At first, I thought "Only Lynne," but it seems there are a lot of members of the Vulture Club. You should move to SW Ohio. Like Susan said, we have TV's all year round, and Black Vultures, too.

Do you remember the quiz that was going around a while back to determine what kind of bird you are? This was me. After reading what you wrote, I feel better now.

Very nice shot! I think reading your blog may have been the first time I realized that TV's don't remain year around in other areas as in TN. I had never thought about it before. Glad you're favorite bird is on the wing again in your area.

Good to see natures large avian clean up crew is back on duty. We can't expect our human roadsides highway volunteers to do everything!

W00T Lynne! Glad your FOY showed up and didn't make you break your neck. Despite the fact that I get to see them year-round, and often more than one at a time, I still nearly crash the car. I just wish they flew over our yard instead... it'd be a lot safer for others.

Looks like you've got a lot of members in your "I Love TUVUs" club, Lynne!

Me, I'll take the herons.

Nice photo-I'm very fond of vultures myself. They may not have the prettiest faces but watching them fly makes me want to take to the air.
