A Peregrine for Susan

There was a peregrine falcon education bird at Carpenter Nature Center from the Raptor Center on Saturday. This was Art's first look at a peregrine. Of all the raptors we saw Saturday, this bird impressed Art the most. He really loved the steel blue-gray on its back and the dark eyes and facial mask.
He said he didn't expect the peregrine to have so much strong color. He like the striped pant-legs too.
We were both fascinated by the bone cracking and crunching as what looked like a chunk of starling was munched.
Is it a male or female Susan?

He is beautiful, can see why he was Art's favorite. Love the PJ legs too. Or are they jailhouse legs?

Absolutely gorgeous. I have yet to add one of these to my life list!

He is so pretty. I like the pattern of his leggings, too. How fun to get a close-up look at coloring and pretty head.

What a lovely bird. There were several nesting pairs in downtown Milwaukee when we lived there. My husband spent a lot of time watching them soar past his office window.

Great photos.

This is definetly a female. The only male peregrine that is part of The Raptor Center's education birds is Chup and he was not with us at the release.

We had 2 peregrines on Saturday. There was one that they were using in the program, which I believe was Artimus, and the other was Juneau who was in the hawk/falcon circle where I spent my morning. Arti is missing a toe so I think that this is Juneau. Juneau came to The Raptor Center because she was shot and it fractured her wing.

Judging by the size of the bird compared to the handler's hand, it's a girl.
And a beautiful one at that, Lynne! Thank you so much for taking such nice photos!
It's like looking at Lucy with two whole wings.
(Just read the above comment...duh.)

See what I mean about the look in their eyes?
A sweetness mixed with awesome ferocity?
(We call the stripes on Lucy's leg her "striped pajamas)
And she has nice yellow feet and cere! A big healthy girl!
Crunchy starling...a nice snack.

And, um...Art? You are starting to sound a little like a birder.

Great photos of the coolest raptor.
Harrisburg, PA--near where I live--has a nesting pair high on the building that houses our state Dpt. of Environmental Resources. The building is named--apropriately--the Rachel Carson building, after the woman who did so much to save raptors!

I really like the striped legs too - and the cool underwing pattern. Peregrines are good looking birds.

What a magnificent bird. I can understand why people practiced falconry.

It's so nice to be able to see these birds close up.-So much of the time they are just zooming by.
