That's a big ol' MUTT mallard.
Cute, though.

Well, I didn't know and I don't have my birding books with me (what? you say), so I did a google on Mutt Mallard. Guess what I find 2nd down the google list...your blog post listing because the comment already left says mutt mallard. Ok, I give up. I don't know if that is right or not.

Long story/short....I don't know.

It looks like a domesticated duck crossbreed. The hatcheries sell Blue Swedish Ducks that look similar in coloring. This is only a guess. Wikipedia says:
The Blue Swedish duck is a breed of domesticated duck.

It is a medium sized duck that weighs between 6.5 and 8 pounds; males usually weigh more than females.

The color of Blue Swedish ducks is due to heterozygosity in a color gene. If a Blue Swedish duck and drake breed, the young are the usual 25% / 50% / 25% ratio in:-

* 25%: A homozygous form, black where the blue should be.
* 50%: As the parents.
* 25%: The other homozygous form, splashed or silver with combinations of blue and black and white.

This breed of duck is listed as watch by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

What the guy above me said, yeah, that's what it is!! LOL!!! And we thought our alphabet was tough, I can't even imagine!! How does one text???

Anyhoo, I think it's a hybird mallard too!

Looks just like one of my domestic ducks I had years ago...good for him!!!

Oriental spam, hmmm, looks interesting. We have those same ducks in our city park, messy, mixed up Mallards. There were a pair this week in a far corner far away from the regulars. It looked like they were being ostracized.

LOL at Kallen's comment!
Lol at the oriental spammer - what's he selling?!!
But that is definitely one interesting mutt mallard!! He's cute - great find!

Whatever it is...it's cute!

Well Lynne, if you would have got the usual butt shot we could all probably identify it...:-)

I haven't a clue, but I loved each of the photographs.

Fresh from Kenn Kaufman's waterfowl ID talk, I cast my vote for "mutt duck."

Mallards commonly crossbreed with barnyard ducks, resulting in all sorts of color variations. Sometimes, they also have funky feather patterns. Then, they escape and show up all over, with the express purpose of messing with birders' heads.

Whatever it is, it isn't a wild, natural duck. But, it is cool.

It's a mallard crossed with something else, but I like the term mutt mallaerd much better.

WOW!! I think I've hit the big time! I've never had an oriental character spammer before.

Thanks everyone for weighing in on the Mutt duck. I saw it last week driving home, no binoculars or camera or GLASSES. I'm not even going to tell you what I THOUGHT it was! I had to go home for my camera and bins to get a pick of this RARE duck.

I'm not sure but I'm thinking it might be a duck.-Nice photos any way.

Where do some of these names come from?? Mutt??
..and yea I think you hit the big time with your asian spammer..
t'would be interesting to know what it said. or not!

Yep, I was thinking Mutt too :) Was it at a local pond or a pond near a city/county pond? It doesn't have the distinctive curly tail-feathers of the Mallard, but the head and beak are a dead give-away and those Mallards breed with so many other ducks I hear... not picky I guess :D

Hi Lynne, nice bunch of duck
photos. You got a great array
of comments on this mallard x
domestic hybrid (I agree with
Katdoc). Curious to know what
you thought it was, and where
it was.

I've heard folks around here are starting to see waterfowl on recently un-iced lakes and ponds. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a Mutt-Mallard around here too (now that I know what to look for!)

They are neat shots, but I don't know what the heck it is, other than duck. I think you got one for the record books. Who knows, you might become famous. :)

Cheers

What a beautiful duck! And ..lol, when I was reading comments and saw ???? hyperlink, all I could say was YES! That's the answer - that beautiful duck came about because of a lot of "hyper-mallarding" going on.

Is it a cross mallard? I can't wait to read any followup you might add to it. It's smaller in size like the female mallard.

I saw four Mallards fly out of the low lands early this morning (first time I've seen them in our swampy area at the bottom of the property in decades, and so I was thrilled!) Had camera and tried to get a pic - got the sky :)

Absolutely stunning and beautiful photos you have! I can't wait to see the rest of your blog. I visited your blog from another. Glad I did. Going to check out more of your beautiful things.

Well, since Montanagirl beat me with the smart-alec answer of "duck" half a week ago, I'll just go with whatever the first Anonymous said. Peking Duck maybe?

Oh Lynne!

Honey! I've been wandering about your blog and Oh My Gosh!

Your birds. The great photos. The smiling faces.

Crossbills, Redpolls (by the gazillions) - a Grouse. I've NEVER SEEN any of these.

You are so blessed to have Hasty Brook.
