...Oh! I love that little mink's expression! He seems to be shooting you "Excuse me, but I'm fishing here" eyes...classic!

Very cool! I've never seen one in the wild. Much better than on someone's coat!

I have to agree with Possum Lady!

Nice photo! I think I may have seen one on Sand Creek a couple weeks ago but I didn't get a good look.

I think that's a great photo; I join the others in saying I've never seen one in the wild. Thanks for the post.

What a beautiful animal. Great photograph for those of us who have never seen a mink in its natural habitat. What a cute face.

Dear Lynne,
Oh my he/she is cute...I agree with everyone else...better than seeing a "mink coat."
Such a fun photograph. I bet it was fun to take.

Thanks everybody! I've seen them in the wild before but this one stopped what he was doing and looked me in the eye for a long time. When he decided I wasn't a threat, he went about his business, fishing about in the water. Then he took a drink and slipped into the water to swim away. I had to turn the autofocus off on my camera and manually focus through all those branches.

Lynne…great mink shot! And you're right, sometimes you have to switch off the autofocus to get the shot—in fact, I probably don't use it more than half the time on birds and wildlife.

Gorgeous discovery!!! :-)

Mink are beautiful, but destructive. One broke into my chicken house over three days and killed one hen the first night, two the second and on the third...14 hens and one rooster! We set a trap on night four and were surprised to find an old, old mink. Our friend (who dabbles in taxidermy) took him home.

Grizz- That was the first time I thought to turn off the auto-focus while in the field. I always think of it later when I'm down-loading the pix. I guess I'm making a little progess!

Shelley- I wish I could have better captured the beautiful shine of his fur.

Cindie- Thanks for commenting! I had no idea they could be so destructive. Why would it kill so many chickens when surely it couldn't eat them all? They sound fearless and aggressive. I think I'll read up on them!

That's the type of little bugger that killed Elvis. But they are lovely animals.
Wow, are YOU getting the stinky eye from him!

Oh that's pretty neat Lynne! I've only seen a mink once in the wild--and it was running.

Oh My! This is a great shot too - love the branches too - adds depth and interest. Good job!

How cool, Lynne. I wonder how people used to make fur things out of these cute little guys.

Nice mink! I saw one this winter at my local nature preserve, and didn't have a camera with me. Now that I have a good camera, I'll probably never see one again.

I am already having an argument with the autofocus feature. It insists on focusing on branches, not birds. I am still slow with manual focus, but plan to try a sub-program called AI Servo AF - It is supposed to work on moving subjects. Will let you know.

Very nice shot, Linne.

It's amazing how you can capture that shot in manual focus. After enlarging your photo I noticed how "in-focus" those eyes, ears and its nose were. Very sharp. Great job, Lynne!

Ooo, how lush! Now that's something I'm not gonna see out here :) Perhaps Minnesota should be on my summer vacation list.
